Lilley & Gillie — Marine & Navigation
Magnetic compasses, transmitting compass systems, electromagnetic speed logs and bridge alarm systems from the English maker directing international shipping since 1812.

Lilley & Gillie — Compasses & Bridge Instruments
John Lilley & Gillie have built marine navigation instruments in England since 1812, from works in North Shields and Birmingham. The range covers Class A magnetic compasses and Sestrel binnacle outfits, transmitting magnetic compass systems that feed heading to the autopilot and ECDIS, Walker electromagnetic speed logs, weather monitoring and BNWAS. The magnetic compass remains mandatory on SOLAS vessels precisely because it is the instrument that still works when everything electrical has failed.

Class A Magnetic Compass
Lilley & Gillie’s Class A magnetic compass, designed to meet SOLAS carriage requirements. The magnetic compass is the one piece of navigation equipment that keeps working when the power does not, which is why it remains mandatory alongside every electronic system on the bridge.
Specifications
Key Features
- Class A compass for SOLAS-regulated vessels
- Operates with no electrical supply of any kind
- Supplied with binnacle outfits or as a standalone unit
- Periodic adjustment and deviation card service available
- Manufactured in England since 1812

Reduced-Height Binnacle Outfit
The reduced-height Sestrel binnacle outfit for smaller vessels. At 577 mm tall it is easier to fit where headroom or sightlines are tight, and less intrusive on a small bridge than a full-height binnacle.
Specifications
Key Features
- Only 577 mm tall — fits where a full binnacle will not
- Easier to install and less obstructive on a small bridge
- Complete outfit including compass and corrector system
- Sestrel binnacle, manufactured in Europe

Full-Height Binnacle Outfit
The full-height binnacle, approved for vessels of any size. Manufactured in Europe from marine-grade aluminium for long service life in a salt atmosphere, and finished in dark Admiralty Grey.
Specifications
Key Features
- Approved for vessels of any size
- Marine aluminium construction for a long service life
- Dark Admiralty Grey finish
- Manufactured in Europe
- Complete outfit with corrector system

Bearing Pelorus
A pelorus lets the officer take bearings from a position where sighting across the steering compass is impractical — around superstructure, or from a bridge wing. A simple instrument that solves a problem no electronic system addresses.
Specifications
Key Features
- Takes bearings where the compass cannot be sighted
- Used from bridge wings and obstructed positions
- Mechanical — no power required
Transmitting Magnetic Compass3 products

Transmitting Magnetic Compass
A transmitting magnetic compass provides a digital output from the magnetic compass. The GS820 uses a sensor coil that reads the compass card, so the vessel’s autopilot, radar, AIS and ECDIS can all be fed heading from the one instrument that never loses power.
Specifications
Key Features
- Digital heading output from the magnetic compass
- Sensor coil reads the card without contacting it
- Feeds autopilot, radar, AIS and ECDIS from one source
- Heading survives a total electrical failure

True Heading Processing Unit
A processing unit with integrated indicators that outputs true heading, calculated from the magnetic compass heading and the local magnetic variation received from GPS — removing the manual variation correction that is easy to get wrong under pressure.
Specifications
Key Features
- Calculates true heading automatically from GPS variation
- Removes manual variation correction and its errors
- Built-in true heading display
- Works with the GS820 transmitting compass

Steering Repeater
Gives a visual indication of heading from both true and magnetic inputs, repeating the compass where the helm cannot see it directly.
Specifications
Key Features
- Displays both true and magnetic heading
- Repeats the compass at the helm position
- Pairs with the transmitting magnetic compass system
Electromagnetic Speed Logs2 products

Electromagnetic Speed Log — Larger Vessels
Type approved for all sizes of vessel, and normally specified for ships over 500 GRT or more than 50 m overall. Speed through water, which is what manoeuvring and engine performance are judged on — not the speed over ground a GPS reports.
Specifications
Key Features
- Type approved for all sizes of vessel
- Specified for ships above 500 GRT or 50 m
- Measures speed through water, not over ground
- Walker — a marine log name in use since the 19th century

Electromagnetic Speed Log — Smaller Vessels
The same type approval covering all vessel sizes, normally recommended for vessels up to 50 m overall. The smaller installation for workboats, pilot craft and coastal vessels.
Specifications
Key Features
- Type approved for all sizes of vessel
- Sized for vessels up to 50 m overall
- Suits workboats, pilot craft and coastal traders
- Speed through water for manoeuvring and performance
Weather & Bridge Systems2 products

Weather Monitoring System
A cost-effective single-masthead weather system built around the Walker P1002 sensor masthead, providing air temperature, humidity and barometric pressure to the bridge.
Specifications
Key Features
- Single-masthead system — simpler and cheaper to install
- Air temperature, humidity and barometric pressure
- Uses the Walker P1002 sensor masthead
- Falling barometric pressure is still the earliest storm warning a ship gets

Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System
A BNWAS monitors bridge activity and detects operator disability that could lead to an accident. If the officer of the watch does not respond, the alarm escalates to the master and then to the whole crew. Mandatory carriage under SOLAS.
Specifications
Key Features
- Detects an incapacitated officer of the watch
- Escalates to the master and then the full crew
- Mandatory under SOLAS on regulated vessels
- Installation and commissioning support available
